How curves are calculated
MOB m = Loans reaching past due ÷ Loans
A group is drawn only up to the months on book that all its loans have reached by the data as of date, so young loans never count as good for months they have not lived.
What vintage analysis shows
Vintage analysis groups loans by their origination month or quarter and lines each group up by months on book. It shows the cumulative share of loans or amount that reached a chosen past-due level within each month on book.
A portfolio total can mix older and younger loans and hide a change in recent lending. Vintage curves can show a recent group going bad faster, so you can review the credit policy behind it and test a change on past applications.
Vintage curve questions
What is vintage analysis for loans?
Vintage analysis groups loans by origination month or quarter and compares their performance by months on book. This tool measures the cumulative share that reached the chosen past-due level within each month on book.
How do you read vintage curves?
Each line represents an origination group, with months on book along the horizontal axis and cumulative share past due on the vertical axis. A line that rises faster shows that group reaching the chosen past-due level sooner.
What does months on book mean?
Months on book measures how long a loan has been held since origination. Vintage curves compare loans at the same age, even when they came from different origination groups.
Why are young loans left out of later months?
A young loan has not lived through the later months on book. The tool draws a group only through the months on book that all its loans have reached by the data as of date.
How can vintage curves show recent lending is going bad faster?
A recent origination group can rise more quickly than earlier groups at the same months on book. The comparison shows the latest group against the average of the six groups before it.
