How it is calculated
Month m = Payments through this month ÷ Balance at charge-off Expected increment (m) = Payments made in this month ÷ Charge-off balance of reached accounts Projected final = Recovered to date + Expected increments for months not reached Share of balance owed = Still to come ÷ (Balance at charge-off − Recovered)
Each charge-off month is shown only through the months all its accounts have reached. Projections stop at the age of the oldest accounts in the file, and the debt sale calculator handles costs and the time value of money.
Debt recovery rates and curves
A recovery rate shows how much of the balance at charge-off has been recovered by each month since charge-off. This tool groups accounts by charge-off month or quarter and uses the payments file to calculate recovery curves.
The curves show how recovery has changed across charge-off groups, and the projection estimates recovery still to come from the older accounts’ payment history. Use the figures to understand a portfolio’s projected recovery or compare it with a buyer’s price in the debt sale calculator.
Recovery questions
What are debt collection recovery rates?
A recovery rate is the share of the balance at charge-off recovered through payments. This tool shows the cumulative share by months since charge-off for each charge-off group.
How do I calculate recovery on charged-off debt?
Add payments up to the month you are measuring, then divide by the balance at charge-off. This tool calculates that share for each charge-off group and month.
What is a recovery curve for charged-off accounts?
A recovery curve shows cumulative recovery by months since charge-off. The expected curve combines payments from charge-off groups old enough to have reached each month.
How can I project recovery still to come?
The projection applies the expected curve’s monthly increments to the months each charge-off group has not yet reached. It stops at the age of the oldest group in the file.
How do I estimate recovery before selling charged-off debt?
This tool uses your payment history to project the recovery still to come. The debt sale calculator lets you compare the projected recovery with a buyer’s price.
