Payment dispute
A payment dispute is a disagreement between a customer and a merchant about a transaction. It can happen for several reasons, including unauthorized charges, billing errors, or dissatisfaction with a product or service. Resolving payment disputes quickly and fairly helps maintain customer relationships and protect the rights of both parties.
Example
A customer buys a product from an online store, but the item arrives damaged. The customer contacts the merchant to request a refund or replacement, which starts a payment dispute. The merchant may resolve the dispute by issuing a refund, sending a replacement, or providing evidence that the product was delivered in good condition. If the customer is not satisfied with the response, they may escalate the dispute by contacting their credit card issuer or payment provider, which can lead to a chargeback. Both customers and merchants can reduce payment disputes through clear communication, realistic expectations, and prompt handling of issues.
